uhmmmm... i've this had very problem myself, 'cept on IRIX.

let me guess you're using NFS? And let me guess the server is linux?
(ok... ok... it's not a guess - i spoke to lyda today).

It's a known problem with certain NFS clients, eg IRIX and now
apparently Tru64, see thread "Re: [NFS] Weird problem: 2.4.2pre3 ->
Irix 6.5.9m" on the sourceforge nfs list:

"NFSv2 has fixed length filehandles - 32 bytes.
NFSv3 allows variable length file handles up to 64 bytes.
Linux' knfsd often uses quite short filehandles with NFSv3.  This
seems to confuse IRIX."

a work around went in 2.4.3. so:

- file a bug report against Tru64

and either:

- upgrade to 2.4
or
- mount the volumes over NFSv2 instead of v3

now.. must go pack. (2 weeks in Portugal!! woohoo!!!)
