[ILUG] RH7.1 - Compiling a new kernel

Hi all,

Has anyone else here had trouble (re)compiling a kernel on RH7.1?   For the
first time since Slackware 2.x I can't get ANY kernel to compile on a Linux
distribution.   I've gone as far as trimming the kernel down to just the
essentials and it still bombs out with an error at one point or another, and
whats worse is that no two errors are consistent.

Is there some dependency issue with RedHat that I'm missing (I'm a Slackware
user mainly)?
