there was a linux kernel patch to suspend all processes to swap.
workaround for laptops w/o a proper hibernate.  the kernel would note
the saved core in swap and restore everything to that state.

i looked into it a long time ago because my compaq presario can't sleep
and can't hibernate to disk, so i was going to try that method.

hunt around for hibernate, laptop, suspend to disk and similar terms
on google.

also, what you discuss is not much different then process migration.
if you're into coding i'd suggest looking at mosix.
