As the risk of being "Don't ask stupid questions - of course I'm doing that"
do you have 3 as your default run level ? Does  grep initdefault /etc/inittab
return

id:3:initdefault:

or 

id:2:initdefault:


If the latter, there's your problem. If the former, then something's sadly
broken. When you start at run level 2, can you login as root and do  init 3
and get kdm up ?
