Perhaps linuxconf/netconf hasn't restarted networking. Seems odd, they are
supposed to. Perhaps it's failing to restart it or something. Try doing
it by hand
as root run:
/etc/rc.d/init.d/networking restart
about the firewall:
perhaps the different interfaces are not all restarted in the init script. For
each of them try:
ifconfig eth0 down
ifconfig eth0 up
changing 0 to 1 2 3 to restart each interface.

When I change network settings through netconf/linuxconf, the settings do not come in effect until I reboot the system. And they do not come into effect at all on the firewall computer in my office(though I got them working for the first time! which was actually the last time), which has three LAN cards, one connected to the internet router and other two connected to two branches of our office.
