If power levels are what you're after then you could take a look
at the source for iwconfig (part of wireless tools).

It spits out info like:

[root at deckard /root]# iwconfig
lo       no wireless extensions.
eth0     no wireless extensions.
eth0:1   no wireless extensions.
eth1     no wireless extensions.
eth2     IEEE 802.11-DS  ESSID:"Impreza"  Nickname:"deckard"
