Wierd ass problem solved. Somehow, in gnome-terminal, the "enable
multibyte support" button got clicked. By a fairy. Or a leprachaun. Or an
eskimo.
This messed up any non-7bit ascii stuff. I could type them in, no
problems. But displaying did wierd stuff altogether.
No idea how this was clicked.
