Yep its also kernel related; some kernel versions, and indeed some 
builds of the same kernel with different options can produce better
results with IDE devices than others; its all related to the kernel
spinlocks.

One particular 2.4.x kernel was a disaster for me; XMMS would just 
starting jerking all over the place when there was heavy disk, or
network activity.
