I seem to remember a gif to ascii application being
around somewhere... it might have been on or a link i found from:
www.tinyapps.org
I'm not sure but it wasnt a linux application as far as i remember.
There was an ascii version of Quake going around a while back...
whatever rendered that would probably do what you want. I assume
that was open source...
