I'll have to check this one out in detail soon. I'm not at a terminal with
X at the moment unfortunatly. The program I settled on after a while was
png2html which does the job just fine for pngs. convert can change for
just about any image format so it worked out well

Apparently there is one or two plugins to gimp around that do something
similar but 10 minutes of tinkering only resulted in disk trashing and
crashing gimp. A better one probably exists somewhere
