For living-room use, what about buying a Nuon-based DVD player?
(http://www.nuon.tv/whatis.html) Then write an MP3-player app for that?

I know a few folks who used their Playstation to play CDs for about 3
years before they felt the need to spring for a proper CD player,
and Nuon looks nicely hackable...
