Probably using "high security" which is the firewall features in latest
distros.
Step One: Try pinging from the server.
does it work? Go to step two.
Step Two : Ping from the desktop. Doesn't work?
/etc/rc.d/init.d/bastille stop
and whatever other firewalls you have. I found that with the high
security setting in Mandrake 8.0, I couldn't ping from any workstation.
Stopped bastille and added rules manually and voila.
Just a thought coz you need to send mo info.

Howdy, I think I'm about to go mad...
I have some files on a linux machine that I want to transfer to a win2k
machine.
Having tried and failed to set up samba properly I thougth I would just
ftp these files across.
This works fine for a while, until my linux box decides that it will not
ship traffic anymore,
eventhough the eth0 dev is still up...
This is highly annoying, as trying to restart the network services craps
out on me.
The only thing that seems to work is a reboot, and then only for a
limited amount of time.
Anyone have any suggestions???
Cheers,
R
