There was an idea being thrown about that we should charge some
percentage of the obscene fees that these people charge employers if
they hire someone as a result of a mail to ilug. Or maybe that was
specifically to do with the proposal to set up a linux jobs section of
the website. I'm a bit fuzzy on the details but I know that last time
it was discussed people were generally against the idea of having
agencies post jobs here.
Now, in the current economic climate people might be more willing to
accept these mails, but I've had to deal with recruitment agencies
recently, and the majority of them are a bunch of cowboys. When you
give them your CV you think they're going to send it to companies who
might be interested in hiring you, that's not necessarily the case.
I had one crowd send me a bunch of cvs for windows people, one for a
business sales person (whatever that is) and a load of contractors,
when I've repeatedly told them that all I'm interested in hiring is
permanent unix people.
Also, they're getting more and more desparate as the market tightens
so I have some of them phoning me everyday. This just pisses me off
rather than making me more willing to hire candidates proposed by
them. Also, in the current market employers will not use agencies if
at all possible. You have a much better chance of getting a job if
you send your cvs directly to companies that you are interested in,
rather than going through agencies.

So did I. In a rather nasty mail.
me.
