You want LIRC. I've got XMMS set up to use the remote from my Hauppauge WinTV
Wossname, and if you can find a remote with more buttons plus a protocol that
works with it, that would be even better. The protocol is called something like
RC5, and is supposed to be one of the major standards.

(MPlayer also supports LIRC, as do a lot of other programs. The irexec program
from the package also allows for configuration of programs to launch on certain
buttons. Now I just wish there was a way to disable a button/pass it on to a
program when one program launched through it is still running. Maybe a hack
for later ;)
