Just when I started to believe I was getting passably capable with Linux, it
brought me back down to reality. Life was fine with Corel Linux 1 & 2, and
various Red Hat's from 5.0 to 7.0. The universe changed when I installed
Red Hat 7.1, however. This became apparent when I was setting up bind - the
bind people (while apparently very competent) must be very bored - a new
entrant called rndc greeted me. It did not greet me kindly, however, but
with a very dismissive "Connection refused". On further investigation,
Linux is in a very humpy humour - a friendly "telnet 127.0.0.1" gave a
similarly dismissive "Connection refused".
At that stage, I decided to retaliate (probably foolishly) via a "chkconfig
iptables off" and a "chkconfig ipchains off", but to no avail. Since I
actually needed the computer to perform a useful task in life, I reinstalled
Red Hat 7.0.
I have to admit I really liked the RedHat 7.1 KDE desktop, it really makes
the Windows desktop a poor second-best. However, can anyone give me a clue
as to what new gremlins have been introduced in Red Hat 7.1 which are
causing my connectivity problems?
