I recently read an article that proposed the idea that M$ are going to
do just that with SQL Server. Once WinXP is the supported platform for
home users too it means they have full 32bit OS platform to work from
and they can do what ever they like with their boot strap. This idea has
been around for a LONG time and was one of the fundamental features of
M$'s fabled Cairo OS (more of an ideal OS where windows should
eventually be rather than a project, they still aren't there yet). BeOS
went some way towards the File-system as a DB idea, not all they way
with metadata though as it was too big a job for them I believe.
