I have had the same problem.. 

I didnt get the problem if gpm was configured for the USB mouse on boot up.. 
no idea why.. I could change it to use the usb mouse while the machine was 
running but one I rebooted I wasnt happy.. boot with a PS/2 mouse or no 
mouse, configure gpm - /etc/rc.d/rc.gpm (is slackware anyways.)
