Look for the changes file in the kernel tree (possibly in the
documentation directory). This lists the packages that need to be
upgraded to get kernel 2.4 working. binutils, gcc and some other packages
will need to upgraded, I had trouble like this when I upgraded from 2.2.18
to 2.4.something. If you got the kernel source from a magazine they
almost never give the other packages with it. I've seen new kernels on
CDs from Linux Format, Linux Magazine and PC Plus and none of them gave
the aditional upgrades that you _need_ in order to get 2.4.x working.
