Most likely there are non-ambiguous changes that the new version depends
on that upgrade won't make for you. Try "apt-get -u dist-upgrade" to see
what's going on.

Don't do apt-get clean yet. Try "apt-get autoclean" first. That won't
delete any debs you actually need.
If you still don't have enough room, find out what's to be upgraded and
"apt-get install" some of the individual packages and "apt-get autoclean"
again to free up some room.
