This appears to be because the smb start script isn't finding smbd and nmbd,
the daemons which provide SMB and NMB services.

How exactly did you install Samba ? If you installed from an RPM or did a
proper source install, you should have everything correctly installed. You
didn't by any chance simply copy /etc/init.d/smb from another machine, did
you ?
