I tried it yesterday, loaded up a .xls spreadsheet. Worked fine. I then
tried it in Kspread and it also loaded fine. Note that I didn't try and
edit the spreadsheet in question. 
The one big difference, Kspread loaded about 10 times faster than
Staroffice..
