Fresh from that call to Eircom, I asked a colleague in France what ADSL
costs him (and I sent that mail to the list - sorry :-( ) and here's his
reply:
> Let's be nasty. I just received the France Telecom invoice this
> Morning, so I give here *real* prices (VAT included):
> - Installation (non-recurrent) : 46.11 EUR
> - Monthly fee (line + Internet + Ethernet modem): 49.54 EUR
>> Let's be nastier: its 512k down, 128k up, and ... there is no cap.
For thos who don't remember, here are the figures for Eircom's cheapest
offering - same rates, but a 3GB monthly cap.
>Connection fee EUR 150 inc. VAT
>Monthly fee is EUR 118.80 inc. VAT
>ADSL USB modem EUR 174 inc. VAT
>ADSL Ethernet modem EUR 240 inc. VAT
so Eircom's monthly fee is > double France Telecom's (and to compare like
with like, you'd have to take one of Eircom's dearer offerings which have
higher or no cap (well, their web site says that some offerings are capped,
so presumably some are not) ) and the connection fee is triple France
Telecom's and in fact it'd be more correct to say that their connection fee
is > 8 times that of France Telecom because you must buy your modem, the
rental of which is included in the France Telecom price. And for real world
throughput, he downloaded 100MB this morning in 40 minutes - this is a
sustained download rate of > 300 kb/s.
