It seems to have gone now, i had a cd and a floppy in the a drive. i tried
reboot without the floppy and then without cd, and every other combination
to see if i could make the error happen again but it all seems to be fine
now, which worries me because is this something that could happen again and
i'd end up loosing everything at a later date.

It's a cyclic redundancy check. It means the data stored on disk etc. is
corrupted. It's usually a sign that you should run off, and get an install
CD.
What is giving the error ?
