I did all that, and now I can read fromt he cd burner in the toast program,
but cant click on the /mnt/cdrom , cdrom0 or cdrom1 and read anything?
Would I be better off with a different window manager?

For the cdrom stuff, try doing
ls -l /dev/cdrom*
if you see /dev/cdrom0 is a link to ../cdroms/cdrom0 then you
can be fix it by editing /etc/devfsd.conf and changing
LOOKUP ^cdrom$ CFUNCTION GLOBAL symlink cdroms/cdrom0 $devpath
to
LOOKUP ^cdrom$ CFUNCTION GLOBAL symlink cdroms/cdrom0 cdrom
and then restart devfsd by find it's process id, xxx say, and sending it a
HUP signal with
kill -HUP xxx
If those instruction are total gibberish to you, let me know,
