which is it Sean - Connemara or West Cork ? I ask because some little place
in West Cork (I'm buggered if I remember the name, but it was somewhere near
Gougane Bearra (I'm sure that's spelt wrong)) was the last place in the
country to have direct dialling.
Its telephone operator, who was also the local postmistress and whose family
also owned the pub, was replaced by an RSU (remote subscriber unit) off an
Ericsson AXE digital exchange. I was there because I worked in Telecom
Eireann's (as it then was) AXE technical support section, and I don't
remember the name of the place because Telecom Eireann compensated the
postmistress for the loss of her job by spending a vast fortune on alcohol
in her family's pub :-)
