There are also some various different standards. DVD+RW is being headed
by Pioneer, DVD RAM by Matsushista(?)/Panasonic. There is also a DVD-R
standard too. All are incompatible I believe. There are PC DVD+RW drives
available from Pioneer but I don't know what linux support is like.

I don't know if DVD+RW has the same restrictions as DVD-RAM, Pioneer had
developed a consumer DVD-Recorder based on it about two/three years ago
hoping that the DVD consortium would back them but I don't think it went
into mass production or was available outside Japan. Was a lovely piece
of kit though. I think it would do 6 hours of VHS quality on a disc. 2
1/2 of DVD quality. Something like that.
