As far as I know if you can register just about any .ie domain name you
want. I have done several so far although none were personal names. All you
have to do is to show that you are entitled to the name. Every business is
entitled to have its name subject only to no-one else already haveing it. So
if I wanted to register johnsmith.ie then it is possible if I go about it
the right way. Here is how I would do it.
1. Use form RBN1 from the company registration office (www.cro.ie) to
register "John Smith Trading" or "John Smith Consulting" etc. This will cost
£25
2. As you are not required to have your full business name in your URL you
can then go to the IEDR and say that you want to register a domain name for
a sole trader (you) and that johnsmith.ie is the domain name that you want.
<funny>
Really simple, and it doesn't just work for johnsmith.ie, it would also work
for lots of other domains like peterburkis.ie or richardmurphy.ie or even
(and I think that this is the killer) jackobrien.ie
</funny>
