I could be stating the obvious but the Xfree86 problem could be rectafied by some of the help files in http://www.linuxnewbie.org ? If you follow all the steps as laid out in that then..... I guess you should be fine, but if you have to reinstall your OS (hehe) because of my advice - don't blame me.

On a side note, I still haven't gotten XFree86 4.1.0 to work properly.
