[ILUG] ISDN - Is it up? Am I being charged? 2 questions.

[ILUG] ISDN - Is it up? Am I being charged? 2 questions.

Hi guys,

Q1: I think I already know the answer to this but I being para about the
possible phone bill.

I have my box setup to manually dial only to the net.

logon as root, "ifup ippp0", "isdn dial ippp0", then to disconnect it either
times out after 4 minutes automagically else I down the interface ala
"ifdown ippp0". Grand.

However and I know this is a stupid question but:
when it automagically down's the connection and I run "ifconfig", it shows
me the NIC's with their respective IP's, and also iPPP0 with an adress. And
if I try to dig www.ireland.com I cannot. So therfore I am disconnected.

But is there any possibility that I am still being charged by eircom? Look I
already know the answer is no but just reassure me please.

Q2: I am thinking about going the dial automagically upon browser request
route. But I am afraid that doze will make it connect by accident. What type
of traffic would cause the connection to establish? Can SMB cause this? What
about Netscape Messanger from either linux or doze? I really don't wan't to
get stuck with a 1 trillion euro bill.
The reaon behind this is that the wife is sick of all the noise and the
machines have to go. I allowed to keep a monitor/keyboard/mouse/switchbox in
the room and the rest has to go far away in the utility room (no cash left
for the attic conversion)

Cordialement,
CW
