Weird! It works here (Mandrake 8.1)

[root at murtaghn nickm]# chkconfig --list mysql
mysql          	0:off	1:off	2:on	3:on	4:on	5:on	6:off
[root at murtaghn nickm]# chkconfig --del mysql
[root at murtaghn nickm]# chkconfig --list mysql
mysql          	0:off	1:off	2:off	3:off	4:off	5:off	6:off
[root at murtaghn nickm]# chkconfig --add mysql
[root at murtaghn nickm]# chkconfig --list mysql
mysql          	0:off	1:off	2:on	3:on	4:on	5:on	6:off

Something must be borked. Did Stephen's idea work?
