That's fine for connectivity (i.e. shelling from one box to the other)
but not so good for trying to tunnel a TCP/IP connection over the
line - you need a PPP endpoint which can be told to use the TCP/IP
pipe provided by ssh.
To the original poster: are you 100% sure you can't use IPSEC?
