>Thanks Ronan and Padraig - these are all close to what i need but not
quite it. A little googling after the post lead me to a program called
ImageReady which ships with photoshop and does exactly what i want so
that solves the problem for now. However I've yet to find an open source
alternative. Paintshoppro ships with something similar but i cant seem
to find it in the gimp or any other linux package. I'll keep looking and
if i find anything i'll post it to the list so others running into the
same difficulty can get around it
