Ok - last post - got it sorted. in my gimp-perl rpm i discovered 
perlotine was actually included under filters->web. i cant get it to 
work to produce gif files but then again i dont particularly want it to. 
works perfectly with jpgs. if anybody is intersted i reckon this baby is 
the way to go.
