It certainly is. It took me a long time to get the answers I wanted. And
I still didn't get them, NTL's phone people don't know shit. Your better
off stating initially that you want to speak to someone with technical
knowledge of the cable modem service. They still don't know shit about
linux. But it was such a good deal I decided what the hell and chanced
it. First month was free when I got it and so was the install (as long
as you rent the modem).

How's this for you, I've the NTL Cable Modem plugged into an Intel
eepro100 card in a Dec Mulita (old Alpha machine) running Debian Woody.
This is the firewall and natting server. The built in ethernet card is
connected to a 8 port hub to which my desktop and wirless base station
are connected. Vaio laptop has a wireless card and accesses the network
via the base station (and the internet).

The setup could not be simpler. Simply plug the ethernet cable that
comes with the unit into you nic, and set the nic to receive it's IP via
dhcp. The cable modem takes care of the rest.

The IP that NTL assign to the modem is dynamic. But if you leave the
cable modem up all the the time you should be ok. I've had the same IP
since I got mine setup back in september/october. I can ssh into my home
network from work with problem. They don't firewall off the service so
I'd advice you to brush up on netfilter.
