Hmm. I've found some Cisco docu that seems to indicate it's a
feature:

I guess I'll have to read some more to figure out how to turn the
feature off, though. There's nothing I can see in the config that's
explicitly enabling the EHLO mangling, but certainly the description
here matches what I'm seeing.
