What are you running unstable/testing/stable?
What do you have in your /etc/apt/sources.list?
How did you install your systems?
A quick hack is always to go to:
/var/lib/dpkg/info/<packagename>.prostinst
dpkg stores the scripts there so you _can_ do some runtime modification
if the script is not behaving.
And hackup the script so that it actuall works, or better, find the bug
and post a bug-report. See http://bugs.debian.org.
