I've played with UML Linux a few times with various root file systems fetched
from the 'net. My favorite one was a base Debian install that I then upgraded
to a full KDE desktop from CD's I have. I've also played with Linux From
Scratch, having built a spare PC using LFS3.3 and adding XFree86 and
KDE3.0Beta2 plus a few other things.
I'm now getting ready to rebuild my main box from scratch to take advantage
of a few things that Debian does not include and to optimize it properly.
Before embarking on such a dangerous treck, I decided to try with LFS first.
I've created a blank file for the root file system. I have this mounted via a
loopback and am currently building a test run of LFS on it. Will this be
sufficient to work with UML Linux? Or am I missing something very important
here?
I'm also a bit confused about devices under UML. My current setup uses the
Kernels OSS sound modules for my Crystal sound card but I've heard various
things about ALSA and would like to use that for my new system. As I
understand UML, I can't actually use real devices like sound cards though. So
it seems I can't practice building and configuring ALSA with it. Is this
right?
Also, my Video card is not yet supported for 3D acceleration under XFree86 so
I'm planning to try the XIG Accelerated-X server instead. Will I be able to
test this via Xnest?
I want to test as much as I can before wiping my partitions for real. I know
that there are several people here who have used UML and Xnest. I got lot of
valuable help the last time with it.
