 init=/bin/bash had the same problem - a hang. I'd have expected loads of
segv if it was trying to run CMOV enabled code. After upgrading glibc, ls
started working again, so RPM seemed to run ldconfig alright.

 init is certainly an i386 binary on redhat though.
