Standard display feature of ldapsearch - I don't understand the logic but 
it works.

What's your /etc/ldap.conf file say?

I found using the pam modules a bit flaky, and in any case, you do need to 
edit /etc/nsswitch.conf.

Also, if you've just installed the module, just log out and log back in.
