which gcc
/usr/sbin/gcc
ls -l /usr/sbin/gcc

I'm guessing that some creative symlinks such that
gcc-3.1 also points to gcc and to cc might just fix your problem

If you can still compile kernels perhaps you have ecgs somewhere
you could try then linking ecgs to gcc and to cc
