Ta very much nils, I was thinking along those lines. I don't think gcc is
actually broken, but its certainly messed up somewhat [cfg].
I'll let y'all know of the outcome.

try booting up with the boot cd, chroot and emerge -C gcc and then
emerge gcc
might work
the boot cd got me out of some very hot water.
