I realise this is probably easy, but after several days work I'm stuck here.
I've built a Linux From Scratch system within a root file system for User
Mode Linux. Once I was able to boot this, I built freetype-2.1.2 and
XFree86-4.2.1 Now I can not get Xnest to run properly so I can continue my
work on the desktop.
From my host system, I run xhost +192.168.1.15 the IP for the UML session.
From one virtual console, I export DISPLAY=debian:0 but when I try to run
Xnest from it, a window opens momentarily and then closes again with this
error:
bash-2.05a# Xnest
Fatal server error:
could not open default font 'fixed'
Running xterm from the same console works, but generates the following
warning:
bash-2.05a# xterm
Warning: locale not supported by Xlib, locale set to C
Warning: X locale modifiers not supported, using default
Failed to open input method
Once I can get Xnest to connect to my host desktop, I can run X from another
UML console inside it. After that I can start building the rest of my desktop
within UML.
All of this is to test my full build environment before wiping my regular
desktop and re-building it all from scratch.
Some months ago I received valuable help from this list for a similar
project, but at that time I was using a Debian system within UML. Now I want
to build it all from scratch so I can know where the problems will crop up.
And this is just one of many so far.
Cheers,
John Gay
