However, I ended up writing a shell script that did;
#!/bin/sh
# Program to print something like;
# id=i-3BAB-503F-167952>
time_string=`date "+%S%M %s"`
echo "id=\"i-`printf "%x-%x-%04d" $RANDOM 1$time_string`\">"
and a Vim macro that did;
imap ,index <indexterm ^[:r!indexterm.sh^MkJA
Seems to be OK.
