Ilug BBC or Toms Root/Boot (configured as necessary for hard-disk access) +
vi on /etc/password 

CC'd to the list because it's not really a hack if you've got console access
...

Other than that, you could mount the drive in a seperate linux (or BSD) box
and do the same
