This reminded me of something I saw once upon a time:

If you're going to do something like that (storing your profile remotely),
you should set the preference
browser.cache.disk.parent_directory
to somewhere on your local machine, or else performance is quite a bit
worse. BUT you won't be able to set a path that works on both Windows and
*nix without some scripting hackery :(

The above setting is actually something to bear in mind for any
installation which has home directories running under NFS.
