Just out of interest given that these are windows usng people and
apparently not particularly technically minded, are they all on your
local network?
If so, would Samba not be an option? It uses encrypted passwords (of some
sort anyway). Granted I presume the data is not encrypted in transit but
on a local network I'd have thought that wouldn't be too worrying. For a
windows user Samba fits the model so well and works really well. WinSCP
etc are really just an attempt to be like windows explorer which Samba
works through.
