or something simple like:

sed -e "s/[-. \ta-zA-Z0-9]*<img src=[\"|\']\([a-zA-Z0-9.]*\)\"[-.
\ta-zA-Z0-9]*>.*/thing\1thing/gp" -e "s/thing\([a-zA-Z0-9.]*\)thing/\1/p"
foo.jsp | grep "^[a-zA-Z0-9-.]*\....$" | sort | uniq

extreanous use of everything, I think I should really have fired up awk in
the middle somewhere...

How about:
sed -n 's/<.*img.*src="\([^"]*\)".*/\1/gp' foo.jsp
