Finally found the problem. The fact that I didn't try connecting from a
Linux box before obviously didn't help.
I had the permissions set incorrectly on the /tmp directory on the
server. It needed  to be world readable writable and executable. 
For some reason I had it set to be only owner executable (why, I don't
know)
