That did indeed do the trick (a combination of fields; my initial thought - that the
MASQUERADE_AS would suffice - was sadly wrong); my humble thanks (to those, too, who replied to
me directly).

If only the documentation for sendmail was slightly less impenetrable than the
configuration files.
