[ILUG] Cd burning problems

[ILUG] Cd burning problems

Hi,
   I got a new 24x cd burner, a memorex twentyFourMax 1040. But i've been
having trouble using it from X. If i boot into a command line login (init
level 3) instead of my normal init 5 (X), then i can write at full speed
without any problems using cdrecord from the commandline.
However if I try and use cdrecord from a terminal window in X, or use one
of the many frontends for it, or cdrdao, then it writes at a data rate that
seems to be exactly 1 speed. Any idea what could be the problem? This is as
root.
I'm using xfree-4 and gnome. Any suggestions on what could be wrong?
              Greg
